Natalia Murphy Tanner is the first African American women to ever become a pediatrician.She aslso achieved maby things people couldn't even think of doing.She was the first black board-certified pediatrician staff at children's hospital in the year 1950.In 1983 she was the first female and African American person to be president of the AAP's Michigan chapter. She also helped improve babby's and children's health across the country.
Natalia Murphy Tanner was born in Jackson, Mississippi on June28,1922.Her parents names were Joseph Rush Tanner and Doris Murphy Tanner. After her first birthday she and her family moved to Chicago, Illinois so her father could practice medicine.During her time in Chicago she went to two schools called Arts Academy of Institute of Chicago and the Chicagon Coservatory of music.In 1939 she graduated from a school called Englewood High School, the she went to Fisk University In Nashville,Tennesse for two years.
After attending Fisk University Nataliawent back to the university of Chicago on a accelerated in pre-medicine.She then transferred to Meharry Medical College after two years and grauaduated in 1946.Natalia continued medical training at Harlem Hospital in New York City from 1946-1947.She also did a residency in pediatrics that stared at the University of Chicago.She was the first African American who was accepted and completed all of her terms at Meharry Hubbard Hospital in 1950.In 1951 Dr.Tanner passed her boards in pediatrician. She was the first African American board-certified pediatrician in Detroit.
Dr.Tanner married a surgenon named Dr.Waldo Cain who lived with his family in Detroit.While living in Detroit she entered priviate practice with Dr.Jhon Lumpkin. She comtinued her private work while accepting a fellowship in Pathology and Hematology at Children's Hospital.In1951 Dr.Tanner becme the first African American Fello of the American Academyof pediatricians. After Dr.Tanner moved to Detroit she was invovled with the National Associationfor the Advancement of colored people and the Episcapal church.Dr. Natalia Tanner is a clinicalprofessor of pediatrician who has been in private practice for 48 years and specialized in Adolescent medicine. She is a great strong leader who can set good example for everyone.In 2001 she was still breaking down racial and gender barriers.She recieved two wonder honors from two important societies she also won the outstanding Achevievement in Adolescent Medicine Award from the Society for Dolescent medicine and Distingiushed Serviceaward from the National Medical Association.She helped little around the world.
